As the final books in the series, these poor characters deserve a break from all of their problems, but that also means I won’t ever get another book in The Moretti Trilogy! And wow, what an amazing ride it’s been.
Characters: Let’s start with Frank. I loved how he wasn’t the typical handsome, charming, perfect guy who populates lots of books. His paralysis completely changed his life, and his struggle was so heartbreaking from the very beginning. Though he was rather stubborn and made me want to shake him at times, it was very true to life. I couldn’t imagine living through all he had, and once you get your eyes off of Jesus, it’s downhill from there (I can speak from experience.) And Carla – I loved her! She was just such a sweetheart, so innocent and kind, and she was so patient with Frank. And of course, how can I not mention him, the man who took over the series here … Alberto Moretti. I’m so glad he was spread throughout all three books, because seeing his character arc was just beautiful. We went from that menacing stalker in book one to the guy who’s encouraging Carla from the Scriptures. I mean … wow. But his wasn’t an instantaneous change – he fell so many times throughout the series just like any Christian does in their journey. Never could Alberto be labeled as perfect, but he progressed in sanctification, learning to obey and trust more every day. His personality is also golden – the New York sarcasm is thick here. He brought a touch a humor amidst all of the suspense! All in all, Alberto is one of those memorable characters who you don’t ever want to forget.
Plot/Setting: Wow. The opening of this book is a whirlwind, and then thing settle down for a bit and there’s all kinds of relaxing character/romance development. This romance is completely clean and very sweet. (Though Frank, you need to listen to Carla. She tells the truth. That’s all I’m going to say.) But don’t let that lull fool you. Things start happening, and it’s a suspenseful ride all the way to the climax! I loved how Carla’s plot was tied up in Alberto’s (and there were so many badguys that just upped the suspense). The setting varied from New York down into Georgia, and while there wasn’t as much speakeasy action as there was in the first two, I enjoyed seeing everyone back home in Georgia. And Alberto being the Yankee in Georgia was kind of funny, too.
Themes: I absolutely love the title of this book, because it’s so important to remember that we do have a truth that is unshaken. Carla, Frank, and Alberto were shaken by a wealth of lies, deception, and bad decisions, but the truth of the Lord was never shaken. Carla learned to trust the Lord more deeply, Alberto once again saw the Lord’s preservation and forgiveness in face of terrible choices, and Frank finally saw the truth that was unshaken by his sorrow. I loved a spot near the end of the book where a character (a very cool one, at that) talked with Frank and basically told him that he had to stop looking at himself and all of his problems and look at the Lord. It was so powerful, and so true. Beautiful!
Overall, this was an amazing series, filled with so much action and intrigue and truth. The writing style fit the story well, quick enough to keep it suspenseful, but holding enough details to immerse the reader in the 1920s. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Whom can they trust?
After losing her parents, Carla Belardi discovers her life was a lie. Now, she must flee unless she wants her parents’ fate to be her own.
Frank Ashton lost the use of his legs—and his desire to live—in the Great War. When Carla is brought to his home injured, he gains a friend. But despite the attraction growing between them, he can never burden her with a cripple.
Alberto Moretti thought he could do good working for the Prohibition Unit—until he finds out his new employer isn’t much better than the criminals he once served. Now, he has to fight both sides—the Prohibition Unit and the crooked Belardis.
When danger surrounds Carla, Frank, and Alberto from too many angles, will they put their trust in the Truth that will never be shaken?
