Editing/Writing Updates

And here it is, finally, a writing update! I haven’t done one of these for … months? Let me look.

Oh dear. It was in September. That was a long time ago.

Sorry about that. But in all honesty, for the last four months, not much has changed. I worked on Unworthy throughout the fall semester and my Christmas break. Many a time, it was slogging. It was hard to edit/rewrite during school, and during my break, I was pretty ambitious and got exhausted often. (Like, every night. But the Lord’s mercies are new every morning, right?)

But now I have finished the major edits of Unworthy, and it’s been sent off to my two amazing editors. (Those are my sister, Kristina, and our mom, who is fondly known as The Typo Queen. They’re the best.) After they finish, I have one more full round of editing, then it’s done! I’m shooting for the third week of February – and yes, releasing it around Valentine’s Day is perfect for at least one of these characters.)

But while Unworthy is out of my hands—and that feels so good!—I’ve started on book #3. I originally thought this book would be much easier than books one and two, because by the time I wrote this one, I had matured as a writer and knew more of what I was doing.

Not so much.

You see, I had a thing with words. (And you think, “Well, of course you did. You’re an author.”) Yes, but … words. I mean, three paragraphs to explain that it’s warm outside?

Yes. Such lovely writing. I cannot even deal with the beauty of it.

Anyway. There’s a lot of words being deleted. Which is a good thing, especially considering it started out around 124K. I do not want to edit something that long. Ever.

So that’s what I’ll be working on for the next few months. Again, I’m getting stuck doing major edits during school, but that’s okay. I write/edit better when I don’t have good teaching practices and theories of learning music buzzing around my head, but I gotta learn sometime! 🙂

And for the writing side of things? I may or may not be starting a writing project sometime soon. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m quite excited to get back into writing first drafts. Possible updates on that one later.

How is your writing going? Have you learned how to juggle writing with the rest of your life? 😊

    • I am verbose. Exceedingly. 🙂

But the good news … it’s down to around 100K, and I’m not even halfway. Ruthless editing!!

Aw, thank you, Joelle! I’m looking forward to hearing about your writing, too! You’ve been tempting me with the little snippets you’ve been posting …

  1. 124,000? I’m proud of you! That’s an impressive, if not daunting, word count. I don’t blame you for not wanting to edit that (as someone who’s written and edited a 130K book, I can tell you it’s not worth the headache unless you really love the story).

Isn’t it amazing how we look back on our writing and see how we’ve grown?

    Can’t wait for “Unworthy”!

    • You edited a 130,000 word book?? Oh my word. You are such a trooper. Thankfully, that 124K thing is gone – long gone. I’m hoping it’ll come out under 90K, but who knows.

It is amazing to look back – but also so cringy. And I thought I was a better writer at this point … *groans*

Aw, thanks! I can’t wait to read Deceived!

  2. LOL, I can relate to the theories (not with music…more like facts about geometry and biology!) swirling in my head! And how you talked about three paragraphs about the weather–hilarious! 😀

I…am probably neglecting my writing more than I would like or have motivation for…LOL! But…I came up with a new idea for a novel!
    Again!
For what is actually the first time this year…*tilts head and considers this in wonder*

    • Oh no, geometry? I was terrible at that. I hope your experience is much better than mine. I couldn’t imagine being able to do much with all those weird proofs and everything spinning around my head.

Yay for new ideas!! They tend to come at the most inopportune of times, don’t they? (Namely when you can’t work on them.) And hahaha, well, it is pretty early in the year …. 😉

  3. Wow that’s a lot of words lol! That’s really impressive! Although editing that…I can’t even imagine XD
Amen, God’s mercies are new every morning! Thanks for that reminder.
I’m currently working on outlining book #1 of my dystopian trilogy (I’m a pantser by nature, so that’s been…interesting. XD)
    Great post! 🙂

    • Hahaha, well, the number of words is dropping. Thankfully! 🙂
And yes – it’s so true. What would we do without His many mercies?
Ooh, dystopian! That sounds very cool. Have you ever written one in that genre before? And good for you at trying outlining! I’m trying to get better at that, too. I’m cheering for you!!

      • Amen, so true!
Yess dystopian! Thanks, I’m really excited about it 🙂 I’ve written part of a fantasy novel that had some dystopian vibes to it (which is currently gathering dust in my hard drive because…well…let’s just say it needs a lot of fixing that I don’t have the time/energy to deal with right now). But yeah XD
Thank you! Yeah, it’s been a good growth experience for me. I’m cheering for you as well! 🙂
        I’m so stoked for Unworthy!

      • Haha, I feel you with the lack of time and energy to deal with books that need lots of hard work! Sometimes letting them sit and allowing your ideas to percolate in the back of your mind helps. 🙂
But yay, working on new stuff is always exciting. 🙂
        Aw, thank you!

  4. Wow, 124k!!! That’s amazing. Though of course I can see how you’d need to be ruthless in your editing! (Ohh I didn’t realize it was your mom that was the Typo Queen! Lol, love it!)

I am so pumped for Unworthy’s release! 😀

  5. You go Vanessa! Ruthless editing! I feel ya, I though my book was good and then went back to edit it and ended up cutting almost twenty thousand words because they served no purpose in the story….lol…
I am so excited about Unworthy! Eee! I can’t wait!
    Wishing you the best!

I’m still learning how to juggle work, editing, reading, and writing but I’m improving some…I think.

    • Hahaha, well, authors just like words, don’t we? It’s amazing how many words can get cut from something, and it doesn’t really diminish the story at all. It just takes a few minutes for us to get to the point of things, right? 🙂
Aw, thank you! I’m so excited for your book! And yes, it’s a struggle to juggle everything. It’s definitely a process. I’m cheering you on! 🙂
