“What’s Your WIP?” Tag!

It’s been a bit since I’ve completed a tag, and this one has to take the cake for one of the most interesting! Thanks so much to my good friend Alyssa over at Seeking the Timeless Anchor for tagging me!

For this tag, I’m going to chat about the project I’m currently editing (the third book in my Grace Sufficient series. I may also complete this tag on my current writing project – book #6 of the series – in my newsletter. So if you want a lot of inside info, subscribe here. 😉)

And without any more jabber, let’s look at the rules (I’m already getting a little bit scared.)

  • Thank the person who tagged you & link to their blog. (Thank you, Alyssa! Be sure to check out her post – she’s writing a WWII novel that sounds absolutely amazing.)
  • Link back to the creator, Katja @ Little Blossoms for Jesus, & add the tag graphic. (Thank you, Katja!)
  • List the rules.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Feel free to add snippets!
  • Tag as many or as few people as you wish & let them know they’re tagged.
  • Add a clean copy of the questions at the end of your post for the “tagged.

Le Questions and Answers

Has your WIP a working title? If so, tell us! If not, have you any idea of what it might be?

Grand drumroll … the title is Untold. (Keeping with the theme here, guys.)

Have you a synopsis for your WIP? If so, give it to us! If not, can you give us a blurb on what your WIP is about?

Give me a few weeks on this one – the upcoming cover reveal will also disclose the horrific thing called a synopsis. (Why are those things so difficult to write?)

Have you a working/mock cover for your WIP? If so, show us! If not, have you an idea in mind?

Yep, once again, give me a few weeks on this one. (But there’s one in the works, and it’s so fitting for the story!)

How did you get the idea for this story?

Ooh, good question. A big part of this story actually came from the second book in the series, Unworthy. I’ve always fooled around with having a spy in this series, but it just never fit with the characters in the first book. So sometime when I was writing or thinking about the first draft of Unworthy, I decided to have a third book. Surprisingly easily, I came up with the idea of Nikolai and his past. Muahahaha, so very fun. 😊

How long do you think it will be? Is it longer or shorter than you thought it would be?

Well, it’s about 25,000 words down from the original draft, so that’s good news, but it’s still a little on the long side. My next round of edits is chopping words out, so I’m hoping for around 90,000. Hopefully.

Who’s your favourite character so far?

That’s a hard one. I have to say I really enjoy writing Nikolai – his past is so intriguing, and I’ve loved digging into that. He also just has such a dry sense of humor that’s come through. But then there’s Gregor Malkov (some of you may remember him from Unknown), and the scenes he’s in are hilarious, even when they’re really not. He’s just so fun to write, and he loves goading all the poor other characters.

What’s your favourite memory related to this WIP?

Favorite memory … hmm … Yikes, does anyone else feel like editing is this giant void of time that just sucks all the memories from you? I feel like whenever I have long periods of editing, I hardly remember anything that happened then.

So I’m not sure … I had a fun time rewriting it recently? 😊 That was a pathetic answer, I know.

Any special person(s) who helped create it?

Aww, yes! My amazing sister, Kristina, actually named Nikolai. (One of his names, at least. 😉)

What’s your favourite scene so far (if you can tell about it without spoilers!)?

I have a lot of scenes that I really like (most of them that are emotionally charged, because that’s the weird person I am). However, I will mention one scene that I think is really cute, and it involves Gabe and Sofia from Unknown. Contrary to popular opinion, I actually love seeing my characters be happy. So yes to a happy scene for Gabe and Sophie. 😊

Can you give us a snippet?

Um … I think that’s confidential information. 🙂

Is the story still what you thought it would be or has it thrown you a couple curveballs?

Great question. I think in general it’s the same basic idea I imagined many years ago, but things have definitely changed with Nikolai (personality, background, etc.) The plot has just become meatier, I guess, and there have been smaller changes. For example, Molly (my female MC), used to not be related at all to Gabe and Sofia, but now she’s Gabe’s cousin to make things work right.

But in general, no massive curveballs – yet.

Is there a Bible verse, poem, hymn, picture, or quote that helped shape this story?

Oh yes! I love this question. One of the big overarching themes of the books is based around “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”

When and where have you done most of the writing so far?

At my desk. I don’t move from my spot almost ever!

Where do you get inspiration for this story?

Is inspiration the same as a kick in the pants because a “deadline” is looming? (Deadline as in summer only lasts a few months, and I gotta get this done before school starts again.)

But I guess some of it comes from verses and songs. Also, the whole spy persona thing – I finally had to get that out of my system after a million failed spies in other books. Also, I just love these characters, and watching them go through these trials and lean on the Lord more is just so much fun.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Pantser, I think? I’m not good at these fancy writing terms.

Do you have a little ritual before you start writing?

Not really, no. I try to pray before I start, but I fail at that a lot.

(Time to do better!)

Are you thinking of publishing this story?

Yup, hopefully late summer 2022! Be on the lookout for more developments in the coming months …

What things have you learned while writing this story?

Ooh, there’s a lot, but a big one that comes through in the book is that our struggles and trials serve to push us to the Lord.

You’ll have to read the rest of the book to find out what else I’ve learned. 😉

  1. OOH, THERE’S A SPY IN UNTOLD????? I DIDN’T KNOW YOU WOULD PUT ESPIONAGE (I’m trying to sound fancy…I learned that word about two years ago, and I’m so pleased with myself XD) IN THE BOOK!!!! *eyes* Then again, my days of spying and trying to be an FBI agent from childhood are long gone…maybe…I think…XD

And LOL, you want your characters to be happy…Hm, you’re not as cruel as some of the other people I know…So you probably could never bring yourself to kill off one of them, hm? 😀

    • Ooh yes, prepare yourself for many spy thoughts. 😉 And yes, all the fancy words are so much fun – espionage just sounds cool. I’m still trying to get over my obsession with spies and spying, hahaha!

Um … well … I wouldn’t say I’m beyond thinking of killing a character off. (Not those exact characters, though. They’re my babies. :))

      • Oooooooh, got it! YES, fancy words are fun…especially around other high schoolers you know little to nothing about…XD

So you ARE thinking about killing characters off that aren’t your own…If so, then HAH, SARAINA, SHE’S CONSIDERING IT!!!

  2. Ooooo this tag looks SO fun!!!! I LOVEEEE the book’s title!! Untold!! aaaahhh it’s PERFECT!!!!! AND THERE’S GONNA BE A SPY IN THIS BOOK???!!! GIRL, I AM ALL HERE FOR THIS!!!!!!! I have a secret-not-so-secret undying love for books with spies!! I mean, how can’t you? THEY’RE SPIES!!!!! I’m SO excited for this book to be published and to see the cover and read the blurb!! I know it’s gonna be EPIC!!! I’m also obsessed with the name Nikolai so there’s that too. XD Also, this might sound weird, but it was kind of a relief to know I’m not the only one who fails at praying before writing, but just like you, it’s definitely something I want to get better at!!! Anyway, LOVED this post, LOVE this series, and LITERALLY CAN’T WAIT for this book!!!! Good luck with that editing!! You go, girl!!!

    • Awww, Issabelle, thank you! (I love your enthusiasm so much.) Well, we have an ex-spy in our midst, so that’s as far as I’ll go with the spying. But it’s definitely fun.

And yes, Nikolai is a cool name. Very sleek. 🙂

Ahhh, yes, don’t we all struggle to pray enough? *sighing* But we’re being sanctified every day and being more formed into the Image of Jesus, by His Power alone!

Thank you so much!! You’re such an encouragement, sister!

  3. Girl, I was JUST thinking of how much I wanted to do this tag! (And how I didn’t have any blog posts lined up for this week/next week…) So THANK YOU!!

And AAAHHHHH!!!! Untold sounds FABULOUS already!!! (I *cough* still need to read Unworthy. I am so behind on books right now I could just cry.)

    • Thanks, Joelle! And I’ll be looking for your post with all the answers to these very interesting questions. 🙂

Awww! I think Nikolai would be appreciate of the love. 😉 And it might take me a bit to get through all of the books … at least another two years. Probably more. 🙂

  5. Great tag, Vanessa! I love writing at my desk too (though, I’ve learned the hard way not to sit for too long Lol.) As for the editing void and the dreaded synopsis, I’m not sure which is worse XD. I look forward to hearing more about your book this summer! Spy stories are a lot of fun 🙂

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yes, writing at a desk is just the way to go for me, hahaha! 🙂 I am very habitual by nature, so it’s kind of hard for me to write anyone else. And yes – I sit too long, too.

Aww, thank you! Spy stories are quite interesting, indeed!

  7. Hi Vanessa, that series looks really cool. I might look into it. I know this is super late but I just found your blog recently and thought this tag looked really cool. Pantster means you fly by the seat of your pants with your book and don’t really come up with a plan. I’m in the middle since I don’t write an outline but I do come up with plots for my next book in advance (even if I never end up finishing the 1st book in my series *sighs* lol). Have you taken any of Brett Harris’s classes or read any of his stuff. I just recently got into his stuff and really like it (mainly blog posts and articles).

    • Hi Sara! Aw, thanks for popping on to say hi! So nice to meet you. 🙂 And haha, yes, thank you for clarifying all those crazy writer terms. I feel like I’m still learning all the fancy jargon. 🙂 And I can totally understand coming up with new plots for other books even while you’re in the middle of another one. We writers are good at that, aren’t we? What genre do you typically write in?

And no, I’m not very familiar with Brett Harris – I’ll have to check him out! Thanks so much for the recommendation. 🙂

      • I saw a blog post once (can’t remember who) that talked about the 2. I had never heard of a pantster before that.
Anyway, um… I’m still in the trying out phase. I’ve tried middle grade, action adventure (FBI stuff ;)) and I’m currently working on a futuristic series (with mind control) I’m a big Adventures in Odyssey fan so I got my mind control idea from the Novacom Saga.
Yes, exactly I have 1 standalone book I started and 1 teen action adventure series I started even though I’m writing this other futuristic book series. I actually just finished the 1st draft of the 1st book on Sunday so I’m super excited. Now it’s off to edit the huge mess (I’ve never been good at organizing messes lol).

      • Ooh, trying out all different genres can be so much fun! And I love that you have a Christian message throughout them. So important! And it sounds like you have a wide array of different genres. 🙂 Wow! Congrats on finishing the first draft! That is so much fun. 🙂 Yes, editing can be hard, but it really does help to organize things. My first drafts are always jumbled, so you’re not alone there.

And yes, it’s so wonderful to get to know other Christian writers. I never knew how many people there are out there in the world who are like me, haha! 🙂

      • I’m hoping my standalone book becomes a thriller and to try contemporary in the future. I noticed you like to write historical fiction. Is that your favorite or is there a different genre that you like better. I like reading historical fiction but I’m not a big researcher so I don’t think I’d enjoy writing that genre (although I’m not saying never 😉) I might try at some point. The only 3 genres I don’t think I’ll ever do is Horror, Romance and Western. Horror is too scary, I’m not a big fan of romance (although I don’t mind a tiny bit if I think 2 characters belong together) and I don’t like westerns (sorry, it’s just not my thing). I’m not sure how to write non-fiction but I think it would be fun to write at some point. Maybe I’ll write an autobiography.

      • Ahh, thrillers are so cool! And yes, I enjoy writing historical fiction, but I’ve been focusing on suspense/thrillers throughout the past year or so. Historical is fun, but I never researched a ton for it – I just wrote for my own enjoyment and not for an audience that cared about historical details. 🙂 But if I ever published a historical novel, I’d definitely have a lot of researching to do. 🙂 Ooh, realistic fiction? That sounds interesting! And yeah, I could never do horror. Nope, nope, nope. 🙂 (And no worries about a question mark – I have typos all day long. 🙂 )

  8. So far my favorite genre is realistic fiction. I’ve written a few fables for a writing class that are set in this time period. It’s very fun! I want to try writing a novel like that (not a fable but a realistic story). And I forgot a question mark in my last post, second time today when commenting. 😂 oops! *?
