Blog Tour: Interview with Penny Zeller, Author of Love Under Construction

She builds websites. He builds houses. Together, can they build a family for two orphans?

Irelynn agreed two years ago to help raise her best friend’s twins should anything happen. When she is called upon to fulfill that agreement, there is only one problem—Irelynn must share the responsibility with the arrogant but handsome Quinton Gregory.

Quinton takes the role of raising his niece and nephew with all seriousness. He will do anything for the twins, even if it means putting up with the beautiful but stubborn Irelynn Brady.

When forced to be in each other’s presence far more often than is comfortable, things slowly begin to change. Will the unexpected attraction between Irelynn and Quinton become a love under construction?

As a part of this blog tour, I was honored to get the chance to interview Penny. It was great to chat with her about writing and publishing. I especially appreciated her advice to aspiring authors – so encouraging and helpful!

Interview with Penny

VH: Hi, Penny, and welcome to the blog! I’m so excited to have you join me today. A big congratulations on the release of Love Under Construction! Tell me a little bit about your writing journey. When did you first start writing?

PZ: Thank you so much, Vanessa, for hosting me on your blog. It is great to be here! I have had a love for writing since I was in second grade and rewrote Bible stories in my own little second grade commentary. Throughout my school years, I would write stories and “publish” them in homemade cardboard books. In high school, I wrote stories where my friends were the main characters.

Fast forward several years when I surrendered my writing to the Lord. I quit my full-time job with a social services governmental agency so I could stay home with my daughters. That was the start of my career, beginning with writing magazine articles. Writing is my ministry and my passion and I pray I will glorify Him with each word I write.

VH: What’s the hardest part about writing for you?

PZ: Excellent question. I would say my most difficult writing obstacle is setting priorities, sticking to them, and not wasting time on less important things on my “to-do list.” Besides writing, I am also a fitness instructor, blog regularly, am involved in ministry, and volunteer. To help myself overcome that obstacle, each morning before I climb out of bed and face the day, I ask the Lord to prepare my heart, that He guide my day, that I would use my time wisely, and that I would get accomplished only what He would have me do that day.

VH: What are your favorite genres to write in?

PZ: Probably my first love when it comes to favorite genres is romance, particularly historical romance. There’s something about taking a trek back into time that sparks creativity. However, I also enjoy writing contemporary romance and have written a romantic suspense novel.

VH: What’s one of your best pieces of advice for an aspiring author?

PZ: I would tell them to persevere. I know that sounds cliché, but it is so critical, especially in those moments when the obstacles mount and it seems like our writing is going nowhere beyond our own computer file. If God has called you to write, He has a purpose for that writing. We may never be best-selling authors, but our writing can still make a difference to those who read it. Joining writing clubs and groups both online and in person can be helpful a well.

God calls us all to do different things for His Kingdom. If He has called you to write, seek His guidance. Never give up, even when you feel like it or when someone has unkindly criticized you. Seek to please and honor Him in whatever you write, whether it be for the secular or non-secular market; whether it be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song lyrics, or a screenplay. Find a mentor and be open to ideas and suggestions from one who’s “been there, done that”. One final note: join forces with other Christian writers. After all, we all work for the same Boss.

VH: Tell me a little bit about Love Under Construction!

PZ: Below is the official blurb:

VH: What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

PZ:I hope they are reminded about the importance of relying on God in difficult circumstances.

VH: What do your upcoming projects look like?

PZ: I have another book set for release in February, this time an historical romance. Two of my most recent projects are with my agent, and I am currently working on another contemporary romance novel.

VH: Thanks so much for chatting with me today, Penny, and congrats again!

PZ: Thank you for having me, Vanessa. It is an honor to be your guest!
